Sunday 13th September saw an exciting new fundraising event: View the photos of our participants here Well done to over 60 cyclists who set off from Hove seafront on Sunday 13 September to ride up the Downslink Way to Bramley – all for the sake of young people. It was a great day out for the cyclists and will raise vital funds. The Street Angels receive no public funding yet Surrey Police acknowledge that their presence in Guildford town centre on Friday and Saturday nights has a very positive effect on lowering the number of unpleasant incidents. Similarly Guildford and Hove YMCAs’ youth projects engage many vulnerable young people in positive activities that transform their futures. As the day progressed the serious cyclists drew well ahead of those out for a fun day. The Downslink Way offers nearly 40 miles of good cycling along the old railway route but some found it a challenge to complete the distance. At the 30 mile checkpoint one rider commented, ‘I cycle 6 miles to work every day but riding on a road is easier than this. But it’s a good challenge, and we’re averaging 10 miles an hour.’ Meanwhile his companion was asking for a massage for his aching legs! The event will certainly be repeated next year. Anyone wishing to be kept in touch about it should call Lorraine on 01483 448796 or email her at LGalliers@guildfordymca.org.uk
